   Major Temples
  • Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple, Agalpadi
  • This temple is the centre of worship of Karadas. As per the belief, in a family feud, a bachelor Brahmin hurriedly snatched two parts of the idol of power godess Durga from his Agrahara in Goa and fled and first settled in Konguru near Mangalore. Later he moved to Bayar, Panja and then Agalpadi in search of a suitable place to establish the power godess. Thereafter, he moved to Taire and finally came back and constructed permanent abode for the godess Durga at Agalpadi. Therefore, the temple has historical importance The present temple is said to have been built during 1916-1922.

Agalpadi, Taire, Bayar and Padre are considered as four villages inhabited by Karadas originally. These villages contribute and participate in activities of the temple. Navaratri, Kartika Hunnime, and yearly Utsav are celebrated with great fanfare and devotion. Since there is a practice of feeding Brahmins on all the days the temple is also called “Mutt”. The temple is the nerve centre of the community and a lot of social activities are organized in the temple.

  • Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple, Taire

Every month, on first Tuesday after Sankramana, there is a special pooja in the noon in addition to Tambila to Jatadhari deity. There is a marriage hall near the temple and offers facilities for social functions to the public.

  • Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple, Avala Panja
  • The temple is situated in the northern slop of the Posadi Gumpe, tallest hillock in Kasaragod District. The temple is said to be about 500-600 years old. It is believed that temple attained its sanctity due to padukas brought from Kerala by the ancestors in the family of present management. Pooja is offered three times a day. The temple also has the distinction of being established first among the four temples of Karadas. Daily pooja, Navaratri, Kartika Poornime, Vasantha Aradhana are carried out by the household of the Konguru Matt. The temple is said to derive power from Saligrama. The temple is owned and managed by Konguru family.

  • Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple, Malla
  • The temple is situated in the bank of Madhuvahini river. Though the temple is owned and managed by Karadas, this temple has wider following due to unique power of the deity. The deity is believed to cure ailments related to poisonous creatures, illusions of pretas, and body related ailments. The deity takes three poojas during the ordinary days and special poojas on special days. The temple feeds devotees of all communities daily. The idol of the main deity is made of Sri Cakra Darpana Bimba. Navaratri, Karthika Hunnime, Vasanthotsave and Kalabha are special days at the temple. Temple also houses a Sri Satyanarayana Mandir and public can offer pooja during night. The temple belongs of Anemajalu family and is well managed. Tall Gopura in the entrence has enhanced the splendor of the temple.

  • Other temples of Karadas
  • Karadas follow Sri Durga Parameshwari. Some families have built separate “gudi”( small temple) outside their houses, probably, to keep the deity “shudda” at all times. There are many such temples as a part of the household itself. There are other temples maintained by Karadas, which came to their possession while purchasing a property or by arrangement with others. Each of these temples are distinct and are important. All these temples are well maintained by the families which established them. These temples offer spiritual and social solace to the public in respective areas in general and our community in particular.
